Grade Two |

|
This year's second graders have entered their classrooms with energy and smiles, completely equipped for new academic adventures! North Haven has adopted the Harcourt Trophies Reading Program. We are very excited that we now have leveled supplemental readers, decodable books, and spelling as well as skills practice consumable books for each student and a language book to accompany the program. It covers all aspects of literacy instruction including reading, writing, and oral communication. The themes for grade two include Being Me, Helping Hands, Our World, Imagine That, Neighborhood News, and Travel Across Time. Students will be engaged in a variety of writing activities throughout the year. Second grade writing focuses primarily on narrative story writing (character, setting, problem, solution). Children will be writing stories which include sequencing, detailed descriptions, character development, and the elaboration of a main event. The second grade teachers are maximizing the components of our math program. It is a hands-on approach to math which allows for a variety of mathematical experiences for children at all levels. We hve a new science program this year which is also published by Harcourt Publishing. Science as well as social studies units are usually correlated with our literature themes. This is done in order to ensure that children become aware of real life connections. We hope this will allow more opportunities for them to apply what they have learned. Some unit of study include: penguins, polar regions, sea life, interactions of living things, Earth through time, maps and globes, and neighborhoods & communities. Let's work together in making our children the best they can be!
