Our fourth graders have begun an exciting year of discovery!!!! Our new Addison Wesley Math Program focuses on hands-on approach using manipulatives and helps students make sense of mathematics in meaningful ways. Problem solving strategies are analyzed and practiced throughout the concepts and lessons. Graphs, adding and subtracting of whole numbers and money, place value, operations, decimals, measurement and probability are the areas that are covered in fourth grade. The concentration in writing this year in on Expository writing. In an organized framework, students will learn how to write well organized, fully elaborated expository pieces. Fourth grade students will also learn English concepts about types of sentences, verbs, subjects, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and writing business and friendly letters. Social Studies Social Studies is correlated with our Language Arts themes whenever possible. Students will be learning about the different biomes including the mountains, oceans, and rain forest. They will also study the regions of the United States with a concentration on the states of Connecticut, Alaska, and Hawaii. The Silver Burdett Ginn Science Discovery Works is a new program which engages students in an active investigation in plants and simple machines and energy. They will also learn about insects. Students will be participating in the Invention Convention in the new millennium. In Language Arts students have started the new theme ~It's Cool It's School". This theme is about real and imaginary fourth grade students that cope with challenges and rewards of life at school. ~Earth Patrol": Preserve and Protect" This theme students will learn how everyone can work together to solve environmental issues. ~Super Sleuths" In this theme students will read mystery stories that involve a treasure map, a license plate and a sneaker. ~American Snapshots" Students will study that a few groups add to the diversity of the United States and how they each contribute something unique in our American heritage. ~Meet the Challenge" Students will read about real people and fictional characters who have the courage to meet life's challenges. Last theme of the year is "Could it Really Happen". This theme is about fantastic adventures that are unbelievable. We are looking forward to a most productive year and the turn of the century.
